Boiler Feed Water Treatment FAQ for Steam Generators

Answers to common questions about boiler and steam-generator feed water: hardness, softeners, RO, TDS, blowdown and what water data to send before ordering.

Feed-water quality has a direct effect on the efficiency, maintenance and service life of electric steam generators and boilers. These answers cover the questions buyers most often ask before choosing a water softener, an RO system or a combined steam and water-treatment package.

Why does a steam generator need treated feed water?

Hard water contains calcium and magnesium that form scale on heating elements and heat-exchange surfaces when water is heated and evaporated. Scale insulates the heating surface, lowers heating efficiency, can cause overheating and increases cleaning and maintenance work. Treating the feed water before it enters the steam generator or boiler reduces this risk and helps keep steam output stable.

What is the most common feed-water treatment for an electric steam generator?

For most electric steam generators and small boilers, the basic treatment is an ion-exchange water softener that removes hardness (calcium and magnesium) before the water enters the unit. Where the raw water also has high dissolved solids (TDS) or the steam is used in contact with products, a reverse osmosis (RO) system may be added. An RO system still needs suitable pretreatment, such as filtration, softening or antiscalant dosing, to protect its membranes from scaling.

When is a water softener enough, and when do I need RO?

A softener removes hardness but does not reduce total dissolved solids. It is usually enough when the main problem is hard water and TDS is moderate. RO is considered when TDS, chloride or silica are high, when frequent blowdown is wasting water and energy, or when the process needs low-conductivity or pure water. A recent water analysis is the best way to decide; without one, the choice is only an estimate.

Which water test results should I send before ordering?

Useful values are total hardness, TDS or conductivity, pH, chloride, iron and manganese, and, if available, silica and turbidity. Also tell us the water source (municipal, well or surface water), the water temperature and whether the supply is seasonal. If you do not have a water report yet, say so in your inquiry and we will tell you which tests are needed.

What is the difference between a simplex and a duplex water softener?

A simplex softener has one resin tank, so softened water is not available while it regenerates; it suits projects where regeneration can be scheduled during downtime. A duplex softener has two tanks that alternate, so one tank supplies softened water while the other regenerates. Steam generators running long or continuous shifts usually use a duplex configuration.

How is a water softener sized for a steam generator?

Sizing starts from the make-up water the steam generator needs (its steam output plus blowdown and losses, minus any condensate that is returned), the daily operating hours and the raw-water hardness. These figures determine the resin volume, control valve and regeneration frequency. Pipe size, available space and whether the supply must be continuous are also confirmed.

Does treated feed water remove the need for blowdown and maintenance?

No. Even with softened or RO water, dissolved solids slowly concentrate inside the steam generator, so periodic blowdown is still needed. Softeners need salt refills and periodic checks of the outlet hardness; RO systems need cartridge-filter replacement, pressure and flow monitoring and periodic membrane cleaning. Following the manufacturer's maintenance schedule protects both the treatment system and the steam generator.

Can I feed RO or pure water directly to a steam generator?

Often, yes. RO water is commonly used as steam-generator feed water where low dissolved solids are needed, but it should be checked against the generator's requirements first. Very low-conductivity water can be more corrosive to some metals and may affect conductivity-type water-level probes, so materials, level controls and any water conditioning should be confirmed for the specific equipment. Tell us the steam application and the generator's materials when requesting a combined steam and water-treatment quotation.

Is the same feed-water treatment used for laundry and food-processing steam?

The principle is the same, but requirements differ. Laundry plants mainly need scale control, so softening is often the core treatment. Food-processing steam that contacts food or food surfaces may need higher water quality and suitable materials, and RO is considered more often. The final choice depends on the raw water and the applicable food-safety requirements in your country.

Can Liangpu supply the steam generator and water treatment as one package?

Yes. Liangpu Environmental supplies electric steam generators, industrial water softeners, RO systems and pure water systems, and can quote them together as a matched package.
