When an industrial project requires high flow, ultrafiltration (UF) and reverse osmosis (RO) should not be treated as interchangeable technologies. A 40T ultrafiltration system mainly removes suspended solids, colloids and microorganisms, while RO targets dissolved salts and lower conductivity. Many projects use UF as pretreatment ahead of RO rather than choosing only one process.

Choose UF when particle removal is the priority
UF can be appropriate for surface-water clarification, process-water reuse pretreatment and applications that need stable turbidity reduction while retaining much of the dissolved mineral content. Membrane material, pore size, flux, backwash and chemical cleaning strategy must be selected for the actual feed.
Choose RO when dissolved salts must be reduced

RO is normally selected when the required product specification includes low conductivity, reduced hardness or removal of dissolved ions. A double-stage RO process can provide further salt reduction, but it also requires appropriate pretreatment, pressure, energy, concentrate management and chemical control.
Information needed for process selection
- Raw-water source and seasonal analysis
- Required treated-water flow and operating hours
- Target turbidity, SDI, conductivity and application standard
- Available footprint, power, drainage and chemical-storage conditions
- Wastewater or concentrate discharge restrictions
- Required automation, remote monitoring and redundancy

Confirm the complete system boundary
A 40T quotation should state whether the capacity refers to feed, filtrate or permeate flow and identify tanks, pumps, dosing, cleaning equipment, instruments and controls included. Site piping and civil works should be coordinated through approved drawings. These images illustrate actual factory configurations; final engineering depends on project data.
